The latest update from the Scientology Volunteer Ministers (VMs) project in Southeast Asia shows that since the tsunami hit, over 500 Scientology Volunteer Ministers were dispatched to the four main disaster zones – Indonesia, Thailand, Sri Lanka and India – with more preparing to go.

The Scientology VMs have become known for giving what has been described as “spiritual first aid” procedures called “assists1” that are designed to relieve the spiritual trauma of injuries and shocks, and restoring people’s hope for the future. There have been over 70,000 Scientology assists delivered by VMs to people in the four primary disaster sites.

Reported are figures of more than 30,000 people (and growing daily) now trained to deliver Scientology assists to friends, family and those in need. Relief workers such as the Red Cross, Buddhist monks, Muslim clerics, police, doctors, soldiers, government officials and many other caring volunteers are among those who now know and successfully use assists to help others.

The head of the Scientology VM operations in Los Angeles stated, “The public response has been amazing. Hundreds of people have called or e-mailed asking to join our relief efforts and many have done so. A woman from the U.S. Justice Department joined one team while someone else who works with the U.S. Red Cross flew to Sri Lanka to work with another of our teams. They saw the need and didn’t hesitate.”

He added, “The VM teams on the ground speak of a constant demand for their organizational skills to get disaster relief actions moving in areas that still have not received assistance. They found the people who would normally be responsible were too numb from shock, even after all this time, to know what to do. Therefore, as well as helping these people overcome their distress, getting the communities they visit rebuilt and back into productive life has become part of their routine actions.”

Reportedly, very few relief organizations remain at the disaster sites, however the Scientology Volunteer Ministers continue their projects to help those affected rebuild their towns and villages to a state even better than what existed before.

One Volunteer Minister currently overseas stated, “I am so happy to see the hard work being done paying off. For example, in Banda Aceh where I have been you see the markets have opened, newspapers are printing, stores are selling, roads are cleared and even some nightclubs have opened. We can see the people are now able to look after their families and get on with their lives. And one of the best things I see is the government and separatists negotiating the long desired peace agreement. I am proud to be here and know that I am helping.”

1. Assists are techniques developed by L. Ron Hubbard. They operate on the principle that one tends to withdraw mentally or spiritually from an injured area. Only by restoring communication with this area can one bring the spiritual element into healing, thereby greatly speeding the healing process. Assists are used to alleviate stress and physical aches and pains, or to orient a confused or distraught individual to his present environment.
