For more than a year, volunteers from the Church of Scientology of Boston have been manning a community center to provide effective help to the community.
The Dorchester Scientology Volunteer Ministry, located at 628 Washington Street in Codman Square, provides free tutoring, courses and activities to reduce the crime and violence of the area by handling the factors that underlie these problems.
In addition to individualized tutoring for children and adults, they offer reading and study skills courses and a human rights education program called Youth for Human Rights.
Rev. Robert Castagna, explained why he established the Dorchester Scientology Volunteer Ministry in the summer of 2004. “We wanted to do something effective to help the community. Literacy affects so many aspects of life. The amount of crime in an area directly corresponds with literacy rates, so we decided to provide tutoring as our first activity.”
The center is open Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 3:00 to 7:00 pm and Saturdays and by special appointment.
