The Director of the National Black Theater of Harlem, Dr. Barbara Ann Teer, multi-award winner and platinum selling soul diva Chaka Khan and rap performer Doug E. Fresh were among the honorees of the “Tribute to African American Artists - The Dream Maker Awards” held Saturday at the Church of Scientology’s Fort Harrison hotel in Clearwater.
Five hundred guests, including state and city officials, NAACP members, ministers of different faiths, artists, and educators attended an evening of celebration and song. The hundred-strong Tampa Without Walls Sanctuary Choir and dancers from the Glorious Church of God in Christ were among the performers.
Rev Alfreddie Johnson gave the keynote address on the subject of “constructive” versus “destructive” art. Rev. Johnson described himself as a Baptist minister from Compton, Los Angeles, who uses principles developed by Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard in his ministry because he has found they work.
Authors Myra Baucom and JoLynn Baucom-Wright were also honored, while Kay Francis Toliver, a retired teacher from East Harlem, a recipient of major awards for the value of her teaching, was presented with the Presidential Dream Maker award.
