HOLLYWOOD — An acknowledgement to the
Los Angeles Police Department was presented during the 73rd Annual Hollywood Christmas Parade on Hollywood Boulevard Sunday night.
The acknowledgement was presented after the LAPD drill team gave a crowd-pleasing series of precision maneuvers, including a single-line salute in front of the Hollywood Guaranty Building, home of the Church of Scientology International. That was answered by thousands of red, white and blue balloons dropped from the top of the 12-story building, while singer Mari Percy performed a musical tribute acknowledging the police.
“We are extremely proud of and thankful for the job that the Los Angeles Police Department does in Hollywood,” said Hilary Royce, spokesperson for the Church of Scientology International and event coordinator for the acknowledgement.
“LAPD officers put their lives on the line each day for us and we want to show Hollywood’s gratitude for the job well done,” Royce said. “And we want to show it in a way that all visitors, merchants and residents of Hollywood can enjoy.”
The Hollywood Christmas Parade started in 1928 and has been sponsored by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce as a destination for locals and tourists alike to give them an opportunity to see their favorite stars in person — and the 2004 edition of the Hollywood Christmas Parade continues that tradition.
This year’s parade Grand Marshal, Earvin “Magic” Johnson, hosted the two-hour parade that included Santa Claus and other celebrities such as: George Lopez, comedian and star of “The George Lopez Show”; Brad Garrett, Emmy Award-winning star of “Everybody Loves Raymond”; Laila Ali, female Super Middleweight Boxing champion and daughter of the legendary Muhammad Ali; Keiko Agena and Scott Patterson from KTLA’s “Gilmore Girls”; and Sofia Milos, star of “CSI: Miami”.
The Church of Scientology International, mother church for the Scientology Religion, purchased the Hollywood Guaranty Building in 1988. The building was then restored to its original 1920’s look, and remains an historic landmark of Hollywood.
