SCIENTOLOGY FREEDOM MAGAZINE INVESTIGATIVE STORY WINS AWARD
The Church of Scientology International’s Freedom investigative journal has received an award of excellence from the nation’s largest religious communications group. Freedom senior editor Thomas G. Whittle accepted the DeRose-Hinkhouse Memorial Award of Excellence in periodical writing from the Religion Communicators Council (RCC), which held its annual conference in Indianapolis April 24-26. Honored was Whittle’s “Behind the Terror” exposé, co-authored with Freedom staffer Linda Amato.

April 24, 2003 — Church of Scientology International Vice President Janet Weiland, who heads the Scientology Disaster Response Team worldwide, was among the guests invited to a special briefing in Los Angeles today by United States Secretary of Homeland Security Tom Ridge. After visiting potential terrorist targets in Southern California, Secretary Ridge spoke at the downtown L.A. Ahmanson Theatre.

HISTORIC ANDRES DIAZ BUILDING IN WEST TAMPA, FLORIDA, IS NEW HOME TO CHURCH OF SCIENTOLOGY OF TAMPA
West Tampa, FL — A nearly century-old building at 3102 North Habana Avenue in West Tampa that began life as the Andres Diaz and Co. Cigar Factory in 1908 became the new home of the Church of Scientology of Tampa on Saturday, March 29, 2003, with a dedication ceremony and open house tours. The Church moved to its new building from its former Tampa premises at 3617 Henderson Boulevard to accommodate the growth of the congregation and their activities. Membership has grown to 5,000 since the first Scientology church formed in Tampa in 1972.

RELIGION OF SCIENTOLOGY RECOGNIZED BY TAIWAN GOVERNMENT
In a decree that reflects the rapid growth of the Church of Scientology in Asia, the government of Taiwan announced yesterday that it has officially recognized the Scientology religion, just 15 years after the first Scientology Mission opened in the capital city of Taipei.
