Since 1998, the Church of Scientology International’s Human Rights Department has organized an annual series of human rights events. Each is supported by Jewish, Christian, Muslim, Sikh, Buddhist, Hindu and other minority religious communities and by the Friends of the United Nations, an NGO that works to bring about increased understanding of the United Nations and its goals.

The Church's annual marathons for human rights often begin and end with rallies and concerts.

In the last few years, the Church has sponsored free human rights concerts in Frankfurt, Berlin, Athens, Hamburg, Paris and St. Petersburg, Russia.

The 2003 Los Angeles Multathlon for Human Rights consisted of a 5-day, 200 mile Multathlon through Los Angeles to unite the diverse ethnic communities in the area. It ended on December 10, Human Rights Day, with a free concert for human rights.

The European Journey for Religious Freedom crossed eight countries.
On the same day, the Los Angeles City Council issued a proclamation commemorating Human Rights Day and recognizing the Church of Scientology International’s Human Rights Department and the United Nations Association-USA, which partnered with the Church in organizing the Multathlon, for their initiatives on behalf of human rights.
