NEW HOME FOR THE NATIONAL CHURCH OF SCIENTOLOGY OF SPAIN
Historic premises, with expanded facilities for community, to open Fall 2003
In October 2002, the Church of Scientology International announced it had obtained new premises for its national church in Spain.
Centrally located in Madrid on the corner of Calle Santa Catalina and Calle Prado, the Churchs new home is the result of a searching review of how the Church can better serve Spain during these times of rising drug abuse, crime and violence, and general instability from world events.
The Church has sponsored drug education and prevention initiatives, its Volunteer Minister program, tutoring and other projects in Spain over the years. These public service programs have rapidly expanded throughout Europe, with millions reached through the drug campaign alone.
In its new premises a historic building which will be renovated to return it to its original state the Church will be able to bring these programs and activities to much more of Spain.
Were investing resources into better serving communities throughout the country, said Pablo Fluxa of the Church of Scientology of Spain. The best way we can help with the current situation in society is to start locally. The problems of drugs, crime, violence make all of us more insecure. So if we can bring peace and security at home, we can help bring it across the world.
The Church in Madrid has been in its current building in the Centro since 1981. Fluxa said that one important factor behind the decision to obtain new premises was that their current building cannot be sufficiently utilized by the community. After speaking with many neighbors, he said, they learned that people want more facilities where events, meetings and conferences can bring people together for more co-action in the community.
At more than 4,273 square meters, the Churchs new building will have spaces for such community functions, as a public service, and will encourage their use.
We look forward to doing more to bring people together and help tackle the major problems that face all of us in Spain, Fluxa said.
