Lafitte, a small town south of New Orleans was somehow missed receiving any disaster relief. However, a self-sufficient
community has carried on.
This beautiful town was named after Jean Lafitte, often called “The Prince of Pirates,” who plundered ships off the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Coast. He never touched an American ship and as he fought in the Battle of New Orleans, was considered a hero in some regions.
Built on one of the fingers of the Mississippi delta leading to the gulf, Lafitte has been a thriving fishing village since 1700.
The hurricanes put most of Lafitte under water and flooded many homes beyond the point of salvage. Today the waterline can still be seen half way up many Lafitte houses.
Concerned for the welfare of the people and knowing of the lack of assistance to the area, the Mayor of neighboring Gretna asked the Scientology Volunteer Ministers to go to help Lafitte recover from the devastation.
The first Volunteer Minister team, including Dr. Rohit Ari, immediately left for Lafitte to assess the situation. They met with the Deputy Sheriff who immediately recognized them and their distinctive yellow shirts, as he had received a tetanus shot from the Volunteer Ministers at the West Jefferson Parish shelter.
A number of people in the town have cleaned up the mess left by the Hurricanes and resumed work (mainly fishing, shrimping and boat tours) and their lives. However, many people, including the Deputy Sheriff himself, have not been able to reach their homes or businesses due to the flooding. After seeing the extent of the flooding and damage, Dr. Ari and the other Volunteer Ministers found out what the townspeople most need and a Volunteer Ministers team returned the next day to Lafitte and began search and rescue operations to locate people still trapped in flooded areas.
There are many towns like Lafitte that still need volunteer assistance and aid. Training is available to anyone wishing to volunteer his or her time.
