Actors John Travolta and Kelly Preston flew in to Baton Rouge and New Orleans yesterday, bringing words of praise and encouragement for rescue workers and victims, along with enough tetanus vaccine to inoculate 450 emergency rescue personnel who risk disease due to the unsanitary conditions.
Mr. Travolta and Ms. Preston first visited Baton Rouge, where they met with the Mayor-President, Mr. Kip Holden, and Chief of Police Jeff LeDuff. They thanked rescue workers and comforted evacuees housed at the "River Center" shelter, where Scientology Volunteer Ministers have been helping disaster victims.
Helicopters and state trooper cars then took them and the chairman of Jefferson Parish to the East Jefferson police station in New Orleans, which is operating as a command center for Hurricane Katrina relief efforts for the county. About 100 police and coastguard officials and other law enforcement and rescue workers, who have been working around the clock, gave them a rousing and emotional welcome. They also met and thanked the Scientology Volunteer Ministers who are working with the police in the area.
Mr. Travolta and Ms. Preston then proceeded to St. Bernard's Parish, where part of Mr. Travolta's movie Basic was filmed, and which Katrina has devastated. Once again, they received heart-felt greetings from the rescue workers.
In the last two days, a Volunteer Minister team, headed by a medical doctor, has provided 1,200 tetanus shots to salvage and rescue personnel.
During his visits, Mr. Travolta showed a demonstration of the "assists" that the Volunteer Ministers are giving and which are helping individuals overcome the trauma of loss of homes and loved ones.
Assists operate on the principle that one tends to withdraw mentally or spiritually from an injured area. Only by restoring communication with this area can one bring the spiritual element into healing, thereby greatly speeding the healing process. Assists are used to alleviate stress and physical aches and pains, or to orient a confused or distraught individual to his present environment. Assists are not "massages." They are techniques developed by L. Ron Hubbard to alleviate the spiritual component of physical pain, shock and emotional trauma.
