Scientology Volunteer Ministers from Tampa, Orlando and Houston have arrived in Louisiana to provide much needed relief to victims of Hurricane Katrina.

The Volunteer Ministers' bright yellow t-shirts were a welcome sight to the refugees at the Centroplex building in Baton Rouge. Once inside what they faced was 8,000 people uprooted from New Orleans, some of them 4 days out of their homes. The floor was literally packed with people, many on cots, and many more on rolls or blankets or simply on the hard cold floor itself.

The head Volunteer Minister said, "Looking around that huge facility, and all the people, it took us 10 minutes just to take it all in. There was so much confusion, thousands of distraught people, some who looked close to death, children running around out of control, we weren't sure where to start. One thing for sure we had our work cut out for us." She continued, "We immediately got to work distributing water and food, finding out what supplies people needed and helping to connect up loved ones by phone. This is a big problem, as many people can't reach their relatives and loved ones to let them know they are alright, so we are connecting up as many as we can by phone."

With an estimated 78,000 people already in emergency shelters, and thousands more pouring in, the current shelters are overflowing. People have to be transported to other locations to provide for the overwhelming amount of dislodged citizens in Louisiana.

Scientologists around the world are raising donations to help with the food, water and other supplies badly needed at this time. Hundreds of Volunteer Ministers have already departed to the hardest hit areas of Louisiana and many more are needed.

Many people are giving generously but the need is huge. This is predicted to be the costliest and most devastating natural disaster in American history.

1. Assists are techniques developed by L. Ron Hubbard. They operate on the principle that one tends to withdraw mentally or spiritually from an injured area. Only by restoring communication with this area can one bring the spiritual element into healing, thereby greatly speeding the healing process. Assists are used to alleviate stress and physical aches and pains, or to orient a confused or distraught individual to his present environment.
