2005 has seen unprecedented growth of the Volunteer Ministers program. Hundreds of volunteers traveled to Southeast Asia to help the victims of the tsunamis in India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Thailand. Hundreds more rushed to the Gulf Coast, Mexico, Central America and Florida to help people put their lives back together after the worst hurricane season in recorded history. And in the course of carrying out their mission, Scientology Volunteer Ministers trained other volunteers and thousands of local residents in the techniques of the Scientology Handbook that form the basis of the emergency work they do.
“We have been so gratified by the public response. During the worst part of the Hurricane Katrina relief effort we were contacted by people from as far away as Canada and Puerto Rico, wanting to train as volunteers and join our teams in Louisiana,” said Mr. Real LaPlaine, International Volunteer Ministers Coordinator. “Even more encouraging was how much those personally affected by the disasters wanted to help and how quickly they joined the ranks of the Volunteer Ministers.”
The fact that most people really want to help others was confirmed by a recent survey where 78% of those interviewed wanted to be able to help others in time of need or when disaster strikes.
Scientology churches and missions around the world provide Volunteer Minister training. Anyone is welcome to take these simple courses, which prepare someone to provide real help for their families and communities—not just in time of disaster, but also with the everyday business of living. 1. Assists operate on the principle that one tends to withdraw mentally or spiritually from an injured area. Only by restoring communication with this area can one bring the spiritual element into healing, thereby greatly speeding the healing process. Assists are used to alleviate stress or to orient a confused or distraught individual to his present environment. Assists are not "massages." They are techniques developed by L.
